Of course, the wonderful thing is that when you buy a pair, a pair goes to a child in need. 2. The Stockton Art Collective Art Show is at Plea for Peace Center this week. If you go to one of the concerts you can go see it at the same time. Check it!!

5. Update your resume. Better yet - make it off the hook (click the link for ideas). Then, get hired somewhere cool. Then, get paid. Hmm...I maybe simplifying the process a bit. But the resume part is pretty easy!

6. Make these and tell me if they are good:

Nanaimo Bars
Bottom Layer
½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
¼ cup sugar
5 tbsp. cocoa powder
1 egg, beaten
1 ¼ cups graham cracker crumbs
½ c. finely chopped almonds
1 cup coconut
½ c. Heath toffee bits (optional)

Melt first 3 ingredients in top of double boiler. Add egg and stir to cook and thicken, about 3 minutes. Remove from heat. Stir in crumbs, coconut, nuts, and toffee if using. Press firmly into an ungreased 8" x 8" pan.

Middle Layer
½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, at room temperature
2 Tbsp. and 2 Tsp. half-and-half
2 Tbsp. vanilla custard powder or powdered vanilla pudding mix
2 cups powdered sugar

Cream butter, cream, custard powder, and icing sugar together well. Beat until light. Spread over bottom layer.

Top Layer
4 squares semi-sweet chocolate (1 oz. each)
2 Tbsp. unsalted butter

Melt chocolate and butter in a double boiler. Once cool, but still liquid, pour over second layer. Chill in refrigerator for several hours before cutting and serving. Cut into small pieces, they're rich!

Oh my goodness, it's June. Who's excited?

ME.

Summer is just about ready to show up. Stockton is waiting to bring on the big guns with 100 degree weather soon enough. There's all kinds of interesting and fun things going on around the city. Wish I could say I've been up to lots of cool things, but my life is mostly work and school and church at the moment. Literally. I don't hate it. Life is wonderful! But 9 to 5 jobs are so tiring. I never realized. I used to make fun of my parents for drinking coffee in the evenings. Now, I'm all about it. I think that's why I'm pulling off an A in Logic so far. Caffeine just helps with logical thinking, I suppose. I haven't had time to check out Stockton like I wanted yet. And now, with Orientation just around the corner, my job is only getting crazier. My point: hang in there! Soon!! July - August will be much better. Can't wait to read and write for fun more once every thing slows down. My blog will be much better. First though, I need a vacation.

On the flip side, I have been spending a lot of fabulous time at Empresso. My latest recommendation: get the Chunky Monkey with a scoop of peanut better. Delicious.

Just Because May Begins with M, Doesn't Mean we need Mustache May

I am very confused by the mustache trend. It is everywhere!!! In wedding photos, jewelry, stationary, weird hoodie sweatshirts from American Apparel - everywhere. It's taking the indie scene by storm. Everyone has probably done the sharpie-mustache-on-the-finger, but ever purchased a handmade felt mustache? Well, they exist. And people are buying them. At first I think people were into the mustache motif because it's retro and ironic, but people are getting more and more sincere about their mustache love. Dare I say it? They're not just for cheesy 70's TV stars anymore. They might be here to stay.

Summa, Summa Plans y'all

I've made it through this semester with my life! 19 units was probably a bad idea. Having jobs on the side...probably also not the best for my sanity/social life/relationships. BUT today is the last day of class. I just have some poetry to finish up and a few final papery things to turn in - but other than that I'm DONE. Can't believe I'm going to be a Senior in college next year. WHAT!? Exciting!! It's funny because there's all these people talking about "what they want to do with their lives" and "figuring it out," but I'm definitely not. I'm more like "uhhh...what's for lunch?" I have no clue what's up next for me - except an awesome summer.

This summer will be super fun. And since I'm living in Stockton and working here too I'll have a lot of new places to check out/share with YOU. I've been writing this blog on and off for a few years so it's cool to see how things change. THANK GOODNESS I'm not working at Music Circus again. Love that place, but it was kind of like selling my soul to musical theatre for the whole summer. Now I'm working on planning Freshman Orientations and maintaining a solid 9-5 kind of job. None of that 14 hour work day business. There's some cool places I'm hoping to visit soon - Friends of the Stockton Library, for one. Some of the cute vintage stores up the road on Miracle mile and another used bookstore I've heard a little about. I'm excited to get to know this city better. It has a special place in my heart.

Cool Website(s): stumbleupon.com Basically, you make an account and fill out a little questionnaire about your interests (art, indie music, sewing, rock climbing were a few of mine), and then you click "stumble." All kinds of interesting website gems will come up. You can add them to your favorites or just keep "stumbling" through all the different pages that come up. I don't recommend it if you're prone to wasting hours on the internet, but it definitely entertains me/gives me ideas when I'm feeling uninspired. I also like that you can set the search results to a specific topic - like just indie music for instance. Some really great music videos popped up when I did that one day.

Tim Kahl, a poet from Sacramento, came into class today. He had very wonderful things to say about poetry - complicated things. I'm still trying to decipher my notes. He has his MFA in poetry and does some great work where he integrates song into poetry, something he terms "imprinting." I got a crash course on systems theory and a little bit of chaos theory (oh, and a little biochem for good measure) and I just sat there in shock - and I thought he was just going to talk about poetry. I also thought, man, I might need an MFA too if I want to understand all this stuff. He tossed out obscure pop culture references like it was slang. In fact, half of the notes I took are just names of authors I've never heard of. But it's kind of fun when professors do that, because then I get to go research it on my own. Brilliant people make two hours of class so much better. And everything he shared truly was intriguing - especially for a total lit lover like myself. I loved his poem titled Sacramento River Days, integrating (or imprinting) a song from Bruce Springsteen (the words in italics). Yes, you can be jealous that I got to hear him perform it. Ken Babstock may have said, "Poetry is a vocal prosthetic for people who can't sing," but hey, if you can sing and perform poetry at the same time that's cool too.

Sacramento River Days

If we utter the names of the creatures we see,

then we will become a cartoon of them,

riding out bikes along the trial by the marina. My two sons and I stop to mock the gulls

in their idiot flocks, taunting them with their

"Mine, Mine" all day long. Aha, there is

Secret Squirrel, skulking across the sweetgum's

branches, then hopping into the trash can

to fashion some futuristic gadget. His brother,

Rocky, flies with his trapeze tail flowing,

escaping the traps of Boris and Natasha.

I see Daffy Duck crossing the parking lot

wisecracking about the weather and

giving us lip about being a road hazard.

One lone egret stands at the water's edge,

elegant as a white plate - no cartoon

to complement it - and we stare at

its slow motion, pretending

the grace it would take us to go

down to the river and into the river we dive

down to the river we ride.

I got a job as a teacher at a college in the community

but lately some classes are cancelled on account of the economy,

so we ride our bikes to the tourist spots,

roll in low gear through the Old Sac streets

and past the boardwalk traffic buzzing by

the windows of the tchotchke shops. We grin at

the homeless guy's dog, sure that it's either

Scooby Doo or Hong Kong Phooey.

It's an afternoon of cartoon classics and

bikers' thunderclaps, Harleys signaling

freedom with every engine revved.

We wander around, the three great scholars

of the three stooges. "Wise guy, eh?" I say,

when one of my sons gives me a flat,

the other one's pockets crammed with

taffy he jacked from Candy Heaven.

The day is perfect and stupid as a dream.

We'll remember it as the day we created

one of the world's great penny-candy thieves.

Now will this memory come back to haunt me

will it haunt me like a curse

Is this dream a lie if it hadn't come true

or is it something worse

that sends us down to the river

and in the river we spy

down in the river is the time of our lives

down to the river

We ride somewhere between a cartoon

and a rock and roll anthem - aimless,

patient, insisting on our place that we

have made in the Sacramento River days,

not far from the confluence.

Love it. I've definitely taken one too many of those taffy candies from Candy Heaven before- in my formative years, of course. This poem is so evocative - make me miss home a lot. I love wandering along the Sacramento River and Old Town. My parents and sister are all together up in Ashland this week, so I can't help but miss the family a bit. Writing papers instead of going to plays is a little bit less fun.

Anyways, Kahl also told us a little about what he does in Sacramento. Apparently, I've been living in Sacramento all my life and there's been this amazing literary mecca hiding in the city called the Sacramento Poetry Center. They have readings and an open mic every week and they've been around since 1979. How did I not hear of this before? They need to have a fan page on Facebook - I feel like that's the only way I find out about everything these days. Kahl also publishes a blog with some of his work.

I should be writing, I should be writing, I should be writing: the mantra of today.

A little something I worked on for class today. I'm no Tim Kahl, but still:

Concerto

I walked along a silent street

with my slicker and a cane.

The shops were closed, I chanced to meet

a cello's nervous strain.

Among the litter and the leaves,

a beat up leather case,

a man who listens and believes

with lines upon his face.

He played his orchestrations

with a solemn, eager brow -

and only beggars, thieves, and I

do live to tell it now.

Coming Up: There's an event going on on campus next week called Enough is Enough - a campaign against societal violence. A film I directed and some poems I've finished are going to be a part of it. Curing Writer's Block

I hate writer's block. It always hits when I'm stressed. The last week has been quite possibly the worst in a LONG time. I've been trying to write for my poetry class all weekend. I sit down to write something meaningful and thought-provoking and - nothing. So here's my list of 25 things you can do to cure writer's block.

1. Write for five minutes. Time it.

2. Open up a book, pick out a phrase, and turn it into a poem.

3. Listen to a station on Pandora (Fleet Foxes station is a personal favorite).

4. Write a blog.

5. Call your best friend.

6. See a therapist. Just kidding...sorta.

7. Go to a local chapel/cathedral.

8. Read a book.

9. Get rejected. Bruised ego + emotion = material! (Sarcasm).

10. Doodle.

11. Clean your room.

12. Go outside.

13. Get in your car and drive. Bring your notebook and a pen.

14. Find some quiet at the end of the day.

15. Bake something.

16. Make a story based on an article in the paper.

17. Tell yourself you're just writing the intro paragraph.

18. Go to a coffee shop (you knew I would say this).

19. Write a story about someone you love.

20. Write letters to someone you love - every day. Send them, or save them up and give them as a present all at once.

21. Write an autobiography.

22. Make lemonade.

23. Take a run.

24. Fall in love.

25. If all else fails, don't listen to me. What do I know?

Sparrow on Miracle Mile. If I had a house and a job that paid me better then I would be in retail heaven. I saw them practically give away an end table (adorable!) for $15 today. And a full queen anne dining table/chairs set? 180 bucks. EVERYTHING is cute. You will love it if you love that vintage, shabby-chic vibe.

Where to Eat: Yogurt My Way and Whirlows on Miracle Mile. It's delicious. Sandwiches, Fro-Yo, and locally-owned. Amazing! Endofstory.

Weekend Plans: Finally the sun is here! I missed it - even if sunshine makes me want to quit school and start doing things with my life. Or at least have class outdoors! This weekend I checked out Miracle Mile, which seems to get better and better ever since I've been in Stockton. Next weekend, I'm BBQing with my buddy Chad and hanging out with the family for Easter. If you're still looking for a rad Easter Service, come check out Reality Stockton! Also, I have grand plans to do some baking for easter. Time to crack out the apron. I miss not having a kitchen - I might not be able to cook, but I can bake like nobody's business.

I was just thinking: Texting is overrated. I'm considering canceling my unlimited plan and telling everyone I know to call me instead. Or send me mail. There is something so wonderful about going to my mailbox and having a letter in there. They're usually from my best friend down in LA, so always a happy experience. Plus, believe it or not, I'd rather talk to my mom instead of text her. Getting a call is (almost) just as good as mail. There's something to be said about talking and conversation - it can't be beat. I probably won't actually go through with it and get rid of texting altogether - it is so handy in a boring class - but maybe technology should just take a break every once in a while. After all, old school car phones weren't so bad, were they??

Real Talk

First of all, I'd like to preface today's post with the fact that I have just had an unusually potent shot of espresso. So much so, in fact, that I'm realizing that maybe my coffee addiction will take a little bit of hiatus. Don't worry, I'm not changing my blog name to "tea leaves" or something - that would be dumb. I am, however, going out with a bang - the drink I had today is called a dirty chai, or a chai bomb, whichever you prefer...chai latte + espresso = magic! This weekend I saw the funniest coffee concept ever: The Michael Jackson. It's a mocha that you can specify pre- or post-thriller. (pre-thriller is dark chocolate, post-thriller is white chocolate, if you catch my drift....too soon??) So I'm pretty high on caffeine and life - which is good - only tomorrow I have class, I'm losing an hour "springing forward," and saving all the fun homework for the morning. It's gonna be fantastic.

On a completely different and uncharacteristically personal note, my life has taken some very drastic and unexpected and providential turns over the last few months. And I'm gonna share (I know, I know...first poetry, and now THIS?!?) Well, it's all Jesus. And I'm pretty sure my messy, irreverent, rebellious heart is being changed every day because of Him. It's blessings pouring out. It's my heart breaking all over the place. It's finding in Jesus not a crutch, but a WHOLE HOSPITAL. It's answers to prayer - tangible PROOF that God is real and working in our messed up world. It's loving people and myself through the hard stuff. It's handing over my future and my dreams. It's doing my homework and not living out a blind faith. It's realizing I just can't have it all together all the time. It's being loved by the perfect lover. It's radical and I know I don't deserve it. The list goes on. In short, my world is being rocked. So here's my hope for you with Easter coming up...find out for yourself what Jesus is all about. Check into it. I'm not talking about religion or church or rule books or even "Christians." I'm talking about the savior and lover of your soul. I know, intense, right?My church is doing a sweet service in downtown Stockton on Easter Sunday. Come! Or, if you know me, get coffee (or tea) with me. You can look up directions to the Easter service at realitystockton.com. And that's my real talk for the day.

Look! Books and Movies and Music aren't all I talk about! Ha! But don't worry, I still have some suggestions for weekending: FRISBEE GOLF. It's the best. And easy. You only need a frisbee and something to throw it at. It's sunny outside and this requires a skill level near zero to have fun. (Higher if you want to win, of course). Do it, son.

ghosts at the door

took my white dress

buried it in the ground

where ghosts lie think

pressing around

weeping trees

misty white hands

Further Proof Miley Cyrus should just go Climb a Mountain and Leave Us Alone

I already have this general distrust of any "role-model" Disney stars, but I think that of all of them Miley Cyrus is my least favorite. And it's completely justified. And it's distrust verging on disgust, to be absolutely clear. Besides turning preteens into screaming crazies at her sold-out concerts, (and I know I'm not the first to say this) but she's like an obnoxious train wreck-to-be that keeps yelling, "Look at me! I'm a train wreck!" So I know it seems funny that of all subjects to write about I'm choosing Miley Cyrus, but I think that the more people who realize that there is nothing "role-model"-ish about her, the happier I will be. And I think my happiness is relatively important.

Also, though, I read a lovely selection from Fay Weldon's "Letters to Alice on First Reading Jane Austen" this week where Weldon tells her niece that she has turned to television for her "window into the world" and as a result, "will know more, but understand less...have more information, but less wisdom." I like it. Nice job, Fay...And then, I was immediately half-scared to death in remembering my own younger sister proclaiming Pride and Prejudice as boring, (unless in the Kiera Knightly kind of version). AH! This was said while watching an episode of Hannah Montana. NOOOO!

Higher Learning

So my return to my lovely residence on campus was greeted promptly with the smell of marajuana coming from who-knows-where. Super. And quite confusing, seeing as I thought my staff and I were the only people living in the building so far. Before fingers started pointing though, I soon found that the god-awful smell is coming from a friendly (though that is still questionable) skunk that has taken up residence somewhere between my building and our neighbors. I swear that if it doesn't take a hike I will have a few choice words for our little furry friend. Just sayin'. I am glad that no one on staff was lighting up - that would be a little compromising as a RA.

It is good to be back at school, though, because it means higher learning of the less illicit type. Here's a few fun things to check out that are also surprisingly educational:

http://tvtropes.org/ - Ok, this website immediately had me thinking. It explains the various figures of speech and where they come from, specifically their origins and uses in both film and television. Just go in an select the "Random Item" link and it's like an instant conversation topic.

http://www.theintellectualdevotional.com/blog/ - Based on the New York Times best-selling book series, this blog has all kinds of random articles designed to "complete your education" filling in the areas your General Ed. courses most likely glossed over. I like it because it's far from dry. In fact, the books are especially interesting because they feature NY Times articles covering American History, Food for Thought, Health, History, Literature, Modern Culture, Music, Philosophy, Religion, Science, and Visual Arts. I bought the book for my mom for Mother's Day and I like it so much, I want to steal it back.

Back to School Bonanza

So true...and yet, I love going back to school. After a long summer away from friends and the pursuit of knowledge (nerd alert) nothing makes me more excited than gearing up for college: round 3. Also, though, the shopaholic in me is in rare form, because nothing is more fun than back to school shopping. Nothing. It may be my unhealthy obsession with art supplies or maybe just the thought of a fresh start - but knowing I'll be moving in this weekend is the best feeling in the world. Hello, long, hot shower! And extra closet space!

In the meantime, I've stumbled upon a few websites that definitely appeal to the back-to-school shopper. Check it -

I'm Keeping My Day Job...

I don't really understand the game of golf - or, better put, I am so terrible at the game of golf, that I clearly don't understand what I'm doing or how to get that little ball more than two feet from my tee. Being stubborn as I tend to be, I recently decided to regularly get dolled up in my golfing gear - which may just include an argyle sweater and plaid shorts or something stereotypical like that - and head out to the golfing range and try to be half decent. I figure that somebody should get my discretionary spending money AND get a laugh out of the deal as well. Also, it drives me a little crazy to have clubs and still be so terrible. So hello, world of golf - I don't know how long I'll be staying, but at least I'm stopping for more than a minute on the golf channel when I'm channel surfing. That's really saying something.

Dear Sushi Lovers: Don't Whine, just dine at Sushi Hook at 807 Howe Avenue. 50% off rolls! What more could you want? I mean, I'm paying to work at Music Circus - so let's be real - the cash flow is close to zero. But, when I have to have my sushi fix I'm definitely coming here. Maybe if I'm tired after a round of golf. I don't know, do people get tired after that?

Also, I'd like to draw your attention to the link to the right, Sac Coffee. This blogger has seriously reviewed coffee shops all over the Sacramento Area and lets you know just where to find a good cup of joe. So basically, it's a caffeine addict's bible (ahem...like myself).

Swank Shows and Even Better Coffee

So, I'm in the process of making Music Circus my new home. I think I'll be doing everything but sleep there, which I'm totally okay with. Rehearsals are happening in the pavilion for now, but soon there will be shows rehearsing at the Sacramento Ballet, the pavilion, and Sacramento Theatre Company. The first run through is happening later this week and final dress for Millie is only a week from now! With Thoroughly Modern Millie in rehearsal, I've been working in the prop shop making all sorts of stuff. 1920's replicas of Vanity Fair, type writers, bouquets, and telephones are only the beginning - there's always the ever-present intern responsibility of sorting through random hardware and tools. But luckily, in between the long (long) days at my (unpaid!!) job, I've been able to check out some cool spots downtown as well.

My Coffee Shop of Choice: Temple Fine Coffee and Tea! I love their chai tea, first of all. But also, you can order tea and it comes in a little kettle, their coffees and teas are rare, organic, and fair trade, and you can order your coffee French Press! Now all I need is to sing on the street corner for a little loose change to buy a cup. Located at 1014 10th Street (between J and K) in Downtown Sacramento.

Must-See Show(s): Forever Plaid at the Cosmopolitan Cabaret just performed its 300th performance last night. It's a fabulous tribute to 50's music and riotously funny - plus, it's totally family friendly. Aaaand, the tenor is incredible! The production continues every night (dark on Mondays) well into July.

A quick summary:

The critically acclaimed show is an affectionate revue of the close-harmony "guy groups" (e.g. The Four Aces, The Four Freshmen) that reached the height of their popularity during the 1950s. Personifying the clean-cut genre are the Plaids. This quartet of high-school chums' earnest dreams of recording an album ended in death (literally and indeed, symbolically) in a collision with a bus filled with Catholic schoolgirls on their way to see the Beatles' American debut on The Ed Sullivan Show. The play begins with the Plaids returning from the afterlife for one final chance at musical glory.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch is playing downtown at the New Helvetia Theatre through June 27th. It's a rock musical with a cult following similar to that of Rocky Horror Picture Show, but I've yet to see it. It comes highly recommended by a friend and closes this Saturday! All performances are at the Artisan at 1901 Del Paso Blvd. in Sacramento.

Yesterday I did something embarrassing - at least something I think many women would never really like to admit they do. I am obsessed with the Nugget Market - especially their friendly employees and gelato. Even more especially their friendly, good-looking employees. And yesterday I bought a grande white mocha just because the coffee guy was cute. Has it really come to this? The stupid part is that the only thing he said to me was, "hot or iced?" Those three words cost me $3.65 and a mediocre coffee.

Which leads me to my movie pick of the week: He's Just Not That Into You.

It's for boys and girls alike. And it's funny. Plus, maybe it can offer a little advice to those of us still going to grocery stores to meet attractive people.

Weekday Plans:

Since we all know that construction of the Elk Grove Promenade has stopped, the shopping choices in Elk Grove are still lacking. Apparently the developer of the mall has gone bankrupt - "one of the biggest real estate failures in HISTORY" according to elkgrovenews.com. Bummer.

But there's good news! Old Elk Grove, since being revitalized, is as cute as ever and has a

few surprisingly adorable stores. (Sorry to male readers. Other than the cupcake shop, I'm not sure how excited you will be about the rest).

Lulu's Cupcakes: Complete with custom cupcakes at $3.50 a pop and scoops of ice cream served in oversized teacups - and adorable decor to boot!

One to Another Gifts & Home Decor: I think that all the students in my mom's class buy her Christmas gifts here. I swear that half the stuff in this store is in our cupboards or in her office. One to Another has a cuuuute little toy section that I will probably revisit next time one of my little cousins has a birthday. They have free gift wrapping, so why not?

Embellish: If I had a house to decorate or had a candle obsession, I would be here all the time. There is a ridiculous amount of cute stuff in this store!

Elk Grove Boutiques: This is a weird little store. It's four different boutiques in one - but they're all in the same room. A little confusing at first. But if I was looking for some bright colored Nike Air Force Ones, coconut purfume, a handbag, or accessories for my dog - then I guess this place is it!

The Red Door Antiques: The fact that I didn't know this store existed before last week is sad. Now we know that what few dollars I manage to earn this summer will go towards buying teacups from this place. Thanks a lot, Red Door Antiques, for taking my money in exchange for old stuff. Albeit, really, really cute and entirely necessary-to-purchase old stuff.

Bjennin: This is my favorite. Vintage and designer clothing for way awesome prices. I think every dress I buy in the future will come from here. And I'm not joking.

Album of the Week: Bounty Original Motion Picture Soundtrack.

My friend, Jared Isham, is a director/writer/gaffer/moviemaker extraordinaire and his movie, Bounty, is now on Netflix. But that's not all! You can also buy the soundtrack (which I listened to today on iTunes). It's classical! It's from a western film! I'm buying it once I'm less of a broke college student. Lets hope that is soon. For now, I have to settle for listening to it 30 seconds at a time.

Song(s) of the Week: "Shoes" by Tre Burt and a Big Gust of Wind. Okay, definitely promoting another friend, here. But really, Tre has some pretty serious poetic chops - and he's not even legal yet. His music is good and the lyrics are even better. Chicka-yeah.

"Cities Burning Down" by Howling Bells (they're touring with Coldplay and they're Aussies)!

Advice for the Day (and I don't usually do this): Don't listen to Tim McGraw or Garth Brooks too much in one day. It leads to something I'm going to call Country-Induced Nostalgia. We all know that too many songs about lost love can't be healthy. "Red High Heels" by Kellie Pickler pretty much turned my day around. Maybe I'll wear some next time I go grocery shopping.

On Wednesday, Google unveiled at Google I/O their ambitious new communication platform using the HTML 5 standard. Check out the preview video of all the cool things "Google wave" will be able to do.

The website wave.google.com explains that:

A wave is equal parts conversation and document. People can communicate and work together with richly formatted text, photos, videos, maps, and more.

A wave is shared. Any participant can reply anywhere in the message, edit the content and add participants at any point in the process. Then playback lets anyone rewind the wave to see who said what and when.

A wave is live. With live transmission as you type, participants on a wave can have faster conversations, see edits and interact with extensions in real-time.

The video below is lengthy, but cool. I have to say - I'm so excited to finally have an e-mail designed for modern users...I will be the first in line to ditch my hotmail account. My favorite part about Wave is that an e-mail conversation can turn into an instant message if both participants are online. I'm sure there are people in the world who are greater theatre fanatics than myself. You know, those people whose homepage is broadway.com and know every play Sir Ian McKellen (most of us mere mortals know him as Gandalf) has ever been in? I'm not exactly one of those. But at the end of every Broadway season, a transformation occurs. Broadway.com is my new best friend - and all because of the largest event in live theatre - the Tony Awards.

I'm especially excited about this year's Tony Awards. Here's my favorite part - the performance lineup:

Each of these musical performances have been nominated for either Best Musical or Best Revival. There will also be performances from currently touring shows. Plus Elton John AND Dolly Parton - are you kidding me?! Check out the nominees and presenters too! All of them will be at the Tony Awards airing June 7th at 8:oo pm Pacific Time on CBS.

The performances are fine and dandy, but nothing excites me more than this year's host, Neil Patrick Harris. Not only is he a stud muffin in a tux - he is fuh-nny. You might recognize him from How I Met Your Mother. His more recent popularity, however, has been brought on by the cult phenomenon in the form of his webisode, Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. The show won numerous awards and all while being written and produced during the writer's strike. After a number of friends sent me links, I finally watched it and wasn't disappointed. After watching, I became sure Harris was the best choice for this year's host.

After Hugh Jackman's phenomenal performance as the host of the Academy Awards, Neil Patrick Harris has a tough act to follow. Audiences won't soon forget how Jackman brought musical numbers and sexiness back into Hollywood's biggest awards show and made the Oscars watchable again (although I'll admit Ellen the year before was still pretty fun). But anyways, I'm pumped for the Tony's and can't wait to see what Harris has hidden up his sleeves.

Bring me Java! Bring me JOY!

Oh, hey. It's been a while. So begins the second installment (if you could call it that) of my attempt to shed light on the things I'm doing, the cool people are doing, and people from the capital city, in general, are doing this summer. I just finished college: year two. I learned a lot about how to survive on the dangerous streets of stockton. I also discovered the importance of Jack-in-the-Box in any college student's diet. Or I guess, the important role it plays in completely ruining any semblance of a diet you might actually have. And of course, I have the usual assortment of books, movies, music, museums, shows, and events to recommend and/or mercilessly tear apart. This summer I'm working at a wonderful little place called Music Circus, located in the heart of downtown. So, hopefully, I'll have a little more info about midtown here than last summer, too. As a part of my Operation: Occupation plan for this summer I'm starting an effort to move on, do fun things, and become interesting enough to catch the eye of the lead singer of this band. That's all I ask.

But in all seriousness, there's so much to be excited about this summer - from the perfect weather we've been having to the cool stuff happening around town (shut up, you central valley nay-sayers). Let's start with movies. We all know Harry Potter is going to be great (plus, they're releasing book 7 in two parts! Yes!) But let's be honest - it's way more fun to see the great movie no one is talking about yet, to get in on the ground floor before all the hype begins. That's why I'm keeping an eye on these Indie Sleepers. I'm particularly excited about Away We Go from the director of American Beauty and Revolutionary Road. And also, what sounds like a perfect summer film, 500 Days of Summer with Zooey Deschanel (gah! Love her!) Plus, sounds like a great soundtrack.

Persepolis is a Must-See

Persepolis is a poignant coming-of-age story of a precocious and outspoken young Iranian girl that begins during the Islamic Revolution. The film is French, animated, and almost completely in black and white. It was nominated for an Oscar and received another 15 wins and 21 nominations. Persepolis is that perfect combination of political commentary, excellent storytelling, and cheeky humor. By the end of the film you will wish Marjane, the heroine, was your best friend. There is a particularly great moment when she breaks out singing "Eye of the Tiger" in her adorably funny Iranian accent. What more can I say? I'm going to go buy the book now.

The Second String Quintet rocked my world a little tonight. The fact that I've been deprived of the live music experience for a while had nothing to do with it. This local band is a perfect blend of folk, soul, and blues as well as original and covered songs. Their sound comes from a smooth blend of banjo, guitar, ukulele, keys, bass, harmonica and drums. The band features Esteban Aguila, Antonio Borrego III a.k.a Snap Jackson, Tony Avila, Nick Johnson, Justin Anderson, and Mike Klooser (who plays keyboard for the band, Smashmouth). They also just released their first self-titled album. They have some shows coming soon to the San Joaquin County that you won't want to miss.

Weekend Plans: Euphorah: The Mist Sets Here will be showing at Stockton Empire Theatre (in the same building at the Java Aroma coffee shop) on the Miracle Mile tonight at 8pm. Doors open at 7:30, Box office opens at 7. Tickets will be $5 at the door. Euphorah is a creative project of Pacific student George Brais that incorporates music, dance, video, poetry, and acting to tell an original story and ensemble piece. It's very avante-garde and unique. If you aren't doing anything tonight, come out and support the arts in Stockton! I saw Howl's Moving Castle last night and it was wonderfully good. My favorite part was probably the score, but I did like Billy Crystal's dubbed voice as the fire demon, Calcifer (I know, there are fire demons. I was confused at first too...) Or of course you could watch it in the original Japanese. Foreign films are cool, and this one is one of the highest grossing Japanese films of all time. But really, it's awesome either way so check it out.

Weekend Plans: I can't say that Java Aroma is the end all, be all of coffee shops, but it does come pretty close. Walking distance of school? Check. Artsy vibe? Check. Inexpensive date? Why not? I kind of get tired of women's magazines. I mean how many more beauty tips can you come up with, really? So when I read Bust Magazinefor the first time I was totally excited that finally here was a magazine for college students and twenty-somethings that actually had something interesting to say. The August/September issue I just bought while I was up in Seattle had an article on how to be your own landlady, a few DIY projects, an interview with Eva Amurri (daughter of Susan Sarandon), a guide to new music and book releases, advice on choosing your first guitar, a photo story about "Little Edie" Beale, and a story about female stand-up comic Maria Bamford (check out the video below). There's a little bit of language and some stories I decided to gloss over, but overall Bust is cheeky, entertaining, a little rebellious, and full of a lot of woman power. I'm down with that.

Book of the Week: A World Lit Only by Fire by William Manchester. This book puts together an informal history of the Medieval Age that is very readable and intriguing, while still being super scholarly. I wrote a ridiculous number of papers last semester about medieval painters, literature, and theatre and I've always found this age in history to be SO interesting. I think you'll enjoy it too.

Weekend Plans: Ryan Horsfall is another one of those friends I like to brag about. Besides the fact that we're old friends, he's also a super-talented magician. As you may or may not know,

Garbeau's CEO Mark Ferreira and Magician Ryan Horsfall are teaming up to present a new and exciting show of magic and comedy. Ryan feels that life is too funny and too wondrous for anybody to go through his or her days without experiencing laughter and astonishment frequently. To help in this, Ryan created a new show. “Ryan Horsfall’s 60 Minutes of Magic” is an original comedy filled magic show based on this simple principle; let’s try and get audiences to laugh 60 times in 60 minutes all the while baffling them with jaw dropping magic. How jaw dropping? It’s magic you’ve never seen before, magic where racket balls appear suddenly, thoughts are read, cards appear in spectators’ pockets, and even water levitates. It’s magic that isn’t cheesy, comedy that isn’t blue, and a show that isn’t something you’re going to want to miss.

The show is playing Saturdays at 1:00 PM at Garbeau's Dinner Theatre on August 2nd, 9th, and 15th. See you there!

When Opportunity Comes Knocking...

To put into words the crazy excitement of the last three days would be impossible, so I'm just going to give a quick summary for now. So at church on Sunday the pastor told everyone that a member of our church was about to start filming an independent film on Monday. The best part was that they were looking for volunteers. My ears perked up (which is surprising since my Sunday morning coffee hadn't kicked in yet) because I had no idea about the film and I thought I knew all about artsy goings-on like that. Needless to say, during the rest of the service I could hardly keep still. I wanted to know all about it and how I could be involved. Sunday night, my mom introduced me to Jodi, the wife of the writer of the screenplay/producer of the film (called, tentatively, "Wheel of Knowledge" by Mike Sewell), she told me to show up for the first production meeting Monday night! Ahh! So on Monday most of the cast (the ones who weren't flying out from L.A. later in the week) was there as well as the crew to have the first read through. I soon got the job and the title of Production Assistant along with one of my best friends, Kirsten. The actors read through the script (and I don't want to give too much away, but the most important part was that it's a movie with a great message and really touching characters). So by the end of the reading, Kirsten and I were wiping away tears and totally stoked to start working on what seemed to be the coolest summer volunteer job possible. And then of course, they tell us that crew call is at 6:30 am the next morning. Okay, maybe that part is not so cool. I don't think I've been up before 9:30 since I finished last semester. But, bright and early at 5:00 I woke up, got some coffee, and then hit the road to our location in Rocklin. The day lasted until almost 5:30 pm and was filled with unloading the equipment, hairspray runs, organizing the wardrobe, fixing make-up and hair, getting coffee and food to the actors and directors, running to the store for ice, moving furniture and lights, waiting, taking notes, fixing lunch with Jodi, more waiting, and getting to know everyone on the set. And today was supposed to be the easy day. So wish me luck! Tomorrow we have two locations, Thursday we have FOUR! The next few weeks are going to be busy, to say the least. Song(s) of the day: Okay, so during some down time on the set today, Kirsten and I started listening to the 7th Harry Potter book read by Jim Dale (like the proud Harry Potter lovers that we are). This reminded me of my (embarassingly?) large collection of wizard rock. Yes. Wizard Rock. Google it. Check it out. It will make you laugh. A lot. Accio Love by Ministry of Magic is probably my favorite. They also do a parody of "Here In Your Arms" by Hellogoodbye called "Here In Your Car" about Harry and Ron in the Ford Anglia.

In Elk Grove, where I live when I'm not at school, there is what some would call limited entertainment. If you like shopping and going to parks, then Elk Grove is probably your Mecca, but I have to work a little harder to find exciting things to do. (Okay, we really do have some GREAT parks, I'll admit). One the whole though, I have to get creative with the stuff I do for fun in my hometown (the reason for the Weekend Plans section of this blog). However, I can say this: my one-stop, quick fix for many of my entertainment needs is Borders. Elk Grove has a pretty good one. I mean there's a fountain outside and everything! So in honor of the many trips to Borders I will make this summer, I decided to make a playlist for book browsing (Weird? Yes. Cool? Also, yes). So here's a list of what I put together: songs I like a lot, but ones that won't make me want to rock out (too much) or jump around (because no one wants to see that when they thought they could enjoy some peaceful book reading). I'm so excited about the Fourth of July this year. I can't wait to get to picnicing with all my friends and family. It's my first time celebrating the Fourth at home in about 6 years! Hooray for America!

Song(s) of the day: Relient K's new extended play album The Bird and the Bee Sides was released today! Check out the website, where you can follow the scavenger hunt clues to a free song download. The EP features 13 new songs as well as a ton of remixed, re-mastered favorites.

Weekend Plans:

The Annual Salute to the Red, White and Blue festival and fireworks display will be held on Friday, July 4th, at the Elk Grove Regional Park (9950 Elk Grove-Florin Road). The festivities begin at 3 p.m. with lively music, and will feature food, vendor booths and a kids’ activity area. A musical fireworks display will begin at 9:45 p.m.
Admission is free; parking is $10 per vehicle.

Also, check out the 4th of July Celebration at Cal Expo. Gates open at 6 with live music and dancing until the fireworks show at 9:30.

Hello, stranger!

I've returned! I just got back from my first camping trip - ever. I had the privilege of being the counselor for a Jr. High camp this weekend and after four days of becoming one with nature, jumping off waterfalls (for reals!), and sleeping with pine cones in my back - it's good to be back among civilization. That's not to say I didn't learn important lessons along the way though - like the value of a flashlight to avoid wandering into neighboring camps and being mistaken for a large animal. That totally could have happened to me, but luckily I was prepared. I also learned that I am terrible at card games. Really. I have very little strategy or will to strategize. Also, I learned that just when you think boys are about to get bored of skipping stones in a river for an hour, they invent a new game - throwing stones at boulders! It's like video games only better, apparently. But really, to be honest, I loved camping. Hot dogs have never tasted better, I slept like a baby, AND (and this is a big deal) I actually enjoyed running around and hiking all day. If you're ever around Mt. Shasta, totally check out Castle Crags - it was pretty sweet.

So in the last few weeks I've been trying to catch up on some reading. You know, books that I definitely should have read by now since everyone and their mother is reading them? Yeah, those. So here's a look at my reading list at the moment:
1. Helen of Troy by Margaret George - I don't know if everyone is actually reading this or not, but I am (about a fourth through) and so far it's pretty good. It's like learning about Greek mythology without actually having to crack a textbook. I'm down with that.
2. The Hours by Michael Cunningham- Okay, so maybe everyone isn't reading this either, but I was reading Virginia Woolf for a class last semester and I was interested to see how her story is woven into this novel. Plus, Cunningham won a Pulitzer Prize, so that must count for something, right? Right.
3. Varieties of Disturbance by Lydia Davis - This is one of those books that I randomly grabbed while in the library, but so far I'm really enjoying it. It's a collection of some pretty unconventional short stories. Some are really, really short...In fact, here's one for you called Collaboration with Fly: "I put that word on the page, but he added the apostrophe." Ha! The end.
4. Dead Heat by Joel C. Rosenberg - So you've probably heard of The Last Jihad, the book about a terrorist plane attack written 9 months before 9/11. Well, Dead Heat is yet another book by Rosenberg. Here's what the back of the book says, "The stage is set for war. Oil prices are surging to record heights. A new dictator is rising in Iraq. China is threatening Taiwan. North Korean forces are ready to strike south. Israel is feverishly trying to complete the third temple." Some of that sounds a little familiar, doesn't it? Oooo...I've got chills already. I can't wait to get started on this one. I love political thrillers.
5. A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius by Dave Eggers - So a few friends recommended this book, so of course I had to see what all the hype was about. Once you get past the psuedo-self-indulgent introduction (How is that possible you say? No idea, but it's there.), it's actually quite a...uh...heartbreaking work of staggering genius? I don't know. There's some really funny and original stuff in here though.

So, maybe not everyone and their mother is reading them. But I am! (Very slowly - the consequence of trying to read a few different books at a time). And so far I definitely recommend that you pick them up.

Song of the Day: "I'm Amazed" by My Morning Jacket - My Morning Jacket's fifth album Evil Urges was released a few weeks ago (June 10). I love these guys. There's something truly Americana about their sound...if that makes sense. Described as a mix of indie rock, country rock, southern rock, psychedelic, and jam band styles, the band was also featured (under the name Ruckus) in the film Elizabethtown (one of my faves). Basically, I think a few of their songs belong on your Fourth of July playlist. Check out the free download here.

Books and Movies and Museums, oh my!

Hello again, dear Reader. This week I'm appealing to all of you bibliophiles. You know how seeing a movie before reading the book can kill even the best novel ever? I hate that. So, to save you from a similar fate, here's a heads up to some new movies in the works that come from some of my favorite (or, at least, well liked) books. Read them first!

1. Journey to the Center of the Earth - It's going to be in 3-D with Brendan Fraser. Need I say more? Release Date (or Read Before): July 11, 2008

2. Inkheart - Brendan Fraser again? It's a teen fiction read by German author Cornelia Funke about a bookbinder who can bring characters to life in his books when he reads them aloud. This equals trouble when the villain escapes. I read this book in middle school and I remember liking it enough to read the sequel, Inkspell. There's also a third book, Inkdeath, due out in English in October of 2008. Read Before January 20, 2009.

3. The Giver - You have plenty of time to read this one - it's release is set for 2011. This still has to be one of my favorite books from middle school...about a utopian society that seems perfect until a young boy learns about the true suffering and joys of the "real" world. And Dustin Hoffman!!

4. Angels & Demons - Dan Brown's prequel to the DaVinci Code has just as much controversy surrounding the film as ever. Director Ron Howard and actor Tom Hanks have been banned by the Catholic church from filming in two Rome churches considered vital to the plot. Crazy, huh? Read before May 15, 2008.

5. Dune - Peter Berg (Hancock, The Kingdom) will be directing the latest attempt to adapt Frank Herbert's popular sci-fi novel. Read before 2010.

6. The City of Ember - I loved this book back in the day (okay, it was 2003). It's a three part series including The People of Sparks and The Prophet of Yonwood. The first in the series is about a city that has always flourished until the lamps that light the city start to flicker and darkness threatens their entire way of life. Two teenagers try to unlock the mystery of their city, have an adventure, and so on. Bill Murray is going to play the mayor and the main character, Lina, will be played by Saoirse Ronan (Atonement). Read before October 10, 2008.

7. Twilight - Considering all the hype that's surrounding this movie, you really have to read the book first. Sure, a film (or book, for that matter) about love and vampires seems incredibly cheesy, but maybe it will stray away from being your average chick flick. Some have compared the popularity of the book series to that of Harry Potter. I don't know if I agree, but I'm willing to give these books a chance - mostly because they are the perfect beach read. The Twilight Saga has four books total: Twilight, Eclipse, New Moon, and the soon-to-be-released Breaking Dawn (August 2nd). The film also looks pretty promising with Kristin Stewart (Into the Wild, In the Land of Women) and Robert Pattinson (Harry Potter as Cedric Diggory, Vanity Fair) playing the lead characters. Read before December 12, 2008.

8. Atlas Shrugged - A powerful railroad executive, Dagny Taggart, struggles to keep her business alive while society is crumbling around her. It's rumored that Angelina Jolie will be playing her. Just to warn you, this is a heavy read. At over 1,000 pages long, it is one of the longest novels ever written in any European language. The book explores a number of philosophical themes Rand would later develop into Objectivism. Atlas Shrugged was voted the most influencial book in reader's lives after the Bible. Read before 2009.

9. The Hobbit - Guillermo Del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth) directing the Hobbit?! I'm so there. Ah! And James MacAvoy is rumored to play Bilbo. Sweet! Read before December 2011.

10. The Tale of Desperaux - The tale of three unlikely heroes - a misfit mouse who prefers reading books to eating them, an unhappy rat who schemes to leave the darkness of the dungeon, and a bumbling servant girl with cauliflower ears - whose fates are intertwined with that of the castle's princess. This film has some pretty big star power: Sigourney Weaver, Emma Watson, Dustin Hoffman, and Matthew Broderick, to name a few. Read before December 19, 2008.

11. The Lovely Bones - Great, great book. The story of a young girl, brutally raped and murdered, as she watches the effect of her death on her family, friends, and murderer from Heaven. Directed by Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings, King Kong)! Mark Whalberg, Saoirse Ronan, Rachel Wiesz, and Susan Sarandon are all in this one. Read before October 9, 2009.

12. The Time Traveler's Wife - A lovely book, hopefully a lovely movie? It's a romantic drama about a Chicago librarian (Eric Bana) with a gene that causes him to involuntarily time travel, and the complications it creates for his marriage to Clare (Rachel McAdams). Read before December 25, 2008.

13. My Sister's Keeper - Directed by Nick Cassavettes (The Notebook) and starring Cameron Diaz, Abigail Breslin, Alec Baldwin, and Joan Cusack. Read before 2009.

Weekend Plans:

I think everyone who lives in the Sacramento area has visited the Crocker Art Museum at least once. Chances are it was in elementary school - that time in your life where you look at modern art, scoff, and think to yourself, I could do that. Well, I think it's time to give the Crocker Art Museum a second chance. With it's current exhibition, The Language of the Nude, the museum unveils 60 of it's rarely seen drawings of the human form. In August, Andy Warhol and American Pop will be the focus of its new exhibition. Also, every Thursday the Museum is open late to host special tours and programs including lectures, classes, and concerts. Highlight tours feature different themes every month and begin at 6:30 PM.

Okay, here is the best part: admission is only $3 with a student ID and FREE Sundays from 10 AM-1 PM. I see some serious inexpensive (yet romantic) date potential here. Hours: Tuesday-Sunday, 10 AM-5 PM. Thursday, 10 AM-9 PM, (closed on Mondays)

NOTE: Don't forget to check out Digital Crocker, the Museum's Online collection of over 500 works of art.

Watch Into the Wild with Emile Hirsch. It will bring out your inner hippie, introduce you to the call of the wild, and make you want to go rough it in the wilderness (well, sort of) - and all in 148 minutes, ladies and gentlemen. It's based on the real story of Chris McCandless, an Emory University grad who gave up his possessions, money, and indentity to live in the wilderness of Alaska. It's a gem in my book. Not to mention director and author of the screenplay, Sean Penn's great attention to detail and heartbreaking insights into society's young generation. Do not delay.

To go along with that, the song of the day comes from the movie soundtrack, comprised largely from original and covered songs for the film by Eddie Veder (Pearl Jam vocalist) and with songs by Michael Brook in the credits. I really recommend the whole album, but definitely check out the cover of Indio's Hard Sun and Rise. Make this the soundtrack to your summer road trip.

Espresso Yourself: Check it out!

Summer finally feels like it's taking off, which in my life usually means that I am busy, busy, busy. You see, my summer style doesn't really revolve around lazing around by the pool and having endless movie marathons, I'm all about going out and doing something. Hence, the short hiatus from Caffeine. But fear not, I have returned, and after a lovely three day vacation spent antique shopping and tea partying with my best friend, I come to you with some more new and exciting things you need to check out this summer.

First of all, I'd like to take this opportunity to highlight the Expresso Yourself links on the sidebar. Not only because there are some pretty interesting blogs and websites that will surely entertain you, but also because many of them are interactive, D.I.Y., and boredom busting!

1. 21Q (or Who Knew Sactown was Interesting?) - So I stumbled across this when I was looking up our subscription to the Bee and was surprised to see all that is happening in the world of arts, entertainment, fashion, and pop culture just in Sacramento. With contributors from The Bee and multiple posts a day, there is always something new to check out.

2. 253 (or the Online Novel that Conquers Boredom) - Imagine 253 people on London's Underground headed for Elephant and castle. Each car holds 36 seats and a driver, each with their own stories. This is how 253 begins to unfold. It's the ultimate novel about degrees of separation. As you read snapshots of each character you can follow hyperlinks to another and discover their relationship. It's a throwback to those Choose Your Own Adventure novels. This is really the perfect 0n-the-go novel. It's entirely online, it's interactive, and you can never lose your spot. Ryman's comedy is spot-on and he has a mosaic of insights to share.

3. Cosmogirl DIY (or How I Keep Myself Busy) - Now before you chuckle about my link to Cosmogirl, you have to check it out. Though intended for ladies, the step-by-step instructions for making t-shirts, necklaces, curtains, and the like could be made as gifts too.

4. Domino (or How to Make the World Prettier) - Domino is hands-down my favorite home decór and interior design magazine of all time. If nothing else, it can help you figure out how to make your dorm room somewhat resemble a homey place to live. On the website, however, there are instructions for everything from wiring an outdoor plug to starting your own garden. Basically, the inspiration for my future home will come from the pages of this magazine.

5. Instructables (or Show and Tell) - If you've ever wondered how to make a Smoothie-Making Human Powered Bicycle or an Underwater Microphone then this is the website for you. There's How-to and Show-and-Tell videos on virtually everything.

6. Pandora (or Instant Party Music) - Music analysts look closely at the characteristics of each song and then you can choose a song you like and Pandora will look for songs with similar characteristics based on over 400 different factors. It's great if you're someone who is looking for music to match your mood. Pandora gets it right for me almost every time.

7. Ryan Horsfall, Magician (or My Friend Ryan is cool) - The title says it all really. If you're looking for entertainment for a party or corporate event, Ryan does a really good job...

8. The Big Four Blog (or The Blog Written by My Cool, Smart Friend) - The Big Four refers to the prime interests of this blogger - music, movies, sports, and politics. Filled with random facts, the blogger's take on the latest news headlines, music recommendations, and more - this blog is a constant surprise. Plus, he's my friend, which makes it 10x cooler.

9. The Clothes Horse (or Inspiration for my Closet) - Just one of those guilty pleasure blogs that fulfills my fashion quota of the day on a regular basis.

10. The Sound of Young America (or Not Your Grandmother's Radio Show) - This is a real treat for your ears, brain, and funny bone all in one. Each week, host Jesse Thorn, self proclaimed as "America's Radio Sweetheart," interviews personalities from the entertainment and arts world. From stand-up comedians to authors of what may be the next great American novel, you don't want to miss an episode.

11. This Blog Will Make You a Better, Smarter Person (or Yeah....) - So I stumbled across this blog on accident, but it is actually one of my favorites here. I saw a show at the American College Theatre Festival this year by a student at UCLA, Kit Steinkellner. I was looking for information about her play later on google (it was an amazing show, by the way) and I found her blog, which is also a gem. It's artsy and full of personality and I guess you have to read it to experience it. It's definitely served as a bit of inspiration for my own blog. Make sure you look at the Websites she likes. There are some really great webisodes there that I also love: Clark and Michael, Ryder's Reel, Dorm Life, and Quarterlife, to name a few. Though she doesn't update very often, check out the archive for some pretty interesting stuff.

12. Threadbanger (or Cooler Clothes Than Yours) - Videos on a variety of do-it-yourself projects for your closet and home. I promise that watching these webisodes will bring out your inner craftiness like no other.

13. Zulkey (or A Better Blog) - Claire Zulkey describes it best: "It's kind of a humor site, kind of a blog, kind of a repository for my writings, kind of an after-dinner mint for the brain." Check it.

Song of the Day: So out of nostalgia, the song of the day is Anne's Theme from the film Anne of Green Gables. This was the favorite film of my childhood and this song is what I hear driving around on those perfect summer days. The instrumental is beautiful and heartbreaking. If you've ever been a fan of the books or movies, you'll absolutely love it. If not, you are missing out, in my opinion. I have the youtube piano version here, but the full instrumental (10x better) is on itunes.

Casey Dienel, singer-songwriter-pianist extraordinaire, released her debut album, Wind-up Canary, in 2006. Her newest album (featuring today's song), is titled Phylactery Factory and was released in March under the name White Hinterland. Indie or Indy?

So summer movies are probably one of my favorite parts about summer. I love those summer blockbusters, but while I'm waiting for Indiana Jones, The Dark Knight, Wall-E, and The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 (no, really), I thought I'd check out some of the lesser known films coming to the big screen this summer in Sacramento. Most of the films I've chosen to highlight are showing at Sacramento's Crest Theatre or Tower Theatre. Also, the Sacramento French Film Festival is coming to the Crest Theatre July 18th - 27th and the Sacramento Film & Music Festival will be there August 8th - 17th. NOTE: Tower Theatre has this great thing called Student Mondays where tickets are $6.50 and include popcorn with refills with a student ID. Check it!

American Teen:
A 2008 documentary film directed by Nanette Burstein (On the Ropes, The Kid Stays in the Picture) set in Warsaw, Indiana, and focuses on graduating high school seniors struggling through school and life. It competed in the Documentary Competition at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, where it received the Directing Award: Documentary.

Why You Should Go: Besides winning the Directing Award and Grand Jury Prize at Sundance this year, American Teen is described as The Breakfast Club of our generation - the difference being that these stories are true.

Priceless:

A woman who has never had much trouble choosing between love or money tries to teach a man the tricks of the trade in this sly romantic comedy. Irene (Audrey Tautou) is an attractive thirty-something woman who lives a comfortable life by taking up with older and very wealthy men. Irene is not so interested in Jean until Jacques decides he's had enough of her and breaks off their relationship; suddenly forced to fend for herself, Irene turns to Jean for help. Jean, meanwhile, has learned that Madeleine (Marie-Christine Adam) has her eye on him. Jean asks Irene to give him a crash course in the fine art of being a gigolo, while Irene tries to get back in the game by taking up with Gilles (Jacques Spiesser). Before the Rains:

An Englishman intent on opening a spice plantation in Kerala attempts to gain the trust of the local villagers and destroys numerous lives in the process in this period drama from director/cinematographer Santosh Sivan. The year is 1937, and the power that the English wield over the citizens of India can be devastating even in the mildest of cases.

Why You Should Go: Merchant-Ivory productions are known for stunning visuals, and Before the Rains seems to be no exception.

My Brother is an Only Child:
Set in a small Italian town in the 60's and 70's, the film tells the story of two brothers who want to change the world ? but in completely different ways. The elder, Manrico (Riccardo Scarmaccio), is a handsome, charismatic firebrand who becomes the prime mover in the local Communist party. Accio, (Elio Germano) the younger, more rebellious brother, finds his own contrarian voice by joining the reactionary Fascists. What starts as a typical tale of sibling rivalry becomes the story of the polarizing and paralyzing politics of those turbulent times and, the rift between the brothers is further intensified when Accio realizes that he loves his brother's girlfriend, Francesca (Diane Fleri) who, like everyone else, is blind to Manrico's increasingly dangerous ideas.

Mongol:

Award-winning Russian filmmaker Sergei Bodrov ('Prisoner of the Mountains') illuminates the life and legend of Genghis Khan in his stunning historical epic, 'Mongol.' Based on leading scholarly accounts and written by Bodrov and Arif Aliyev, 'Mongol' delves into the dramatic and harrowing early years of the ruler who was born as Temudgin in 1162. As it follows Temudgin from his perilous childhood to the battle that sealed his destiny, the film paints a multidimensional portrait of the future conqueror, revealing him not as the evil brute of hoary stereotype, but as an inspiring, fearless and visionary leader. 'Mongol' shows us the making of an extraordinary man, and the foundation on which so much of his greatness rested: his relationship with his wife, Borte, his lifelong love and most trusted advisor.

Why You Should Go: The dialogue is in Mongolian and was submitted by Kazahkstan for the Foreign Language Film category in the 80th Academy Awards. Since the film is based on scholarly accounts, you can walk away feeling a little more cultured too.

I feel a little bit bad for Scarlett Johansson. Her new album titled Anywhere I Lay My Head has this actor-turned-singer covering Tom Waits' songs (nothing new in Hollywood these days, of course) . I was a little excited at first. I mean, pretty people always look like they should have pretty voices. And Scarlett is gorgeous, so that should exponentially increase the awesomeness of her voice, right? Wrong. Her new album, as a "project" of sorts, is a disappointment. The problem seems to be that her songs are overproduced - her whispery voice is drowned by backup vocals and instrumentals. It's not the "alternative" or "indie" sound that I was hoping for - instead we get to hear interesting ambiance instrumentals hide a seemingly average voice. Also, she sings completely without feeling. There is no soul in her songs - a trait that makes Tom Waits' songs worthwhile in the first place. Poor Scarlett. I would say stick to acting, but if you remember her singing "Summertime" from the album Unexpected Dreams: Songs from the Stars the difference in her voice is like night and day. She has a smoky sound that sounds perfect with jazzy, simple tunes like that. Never mind the irony in Scarlett singing about a black woman picking cotton. Fiddle-dee-dee! But why listen to little old me? Listen for yourself.

Song of the Day: M79 by Vampire Weekend is a jaunty, funky song from the debut album. A mix of Western classical music and African popular music makes a genre that the band describes as "Upper West Side Soweto". Vampire Weekend toured with the Shins last year and had the #67 spot on the Billboard Top 100 for their song "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa". Enjoy!

Weekend Plans: Rick's Dessert Diner! Okay, you guys, you guys. Let me just take this opportunity to divulge a not-so-secret secret. The pun in the title was intended. Okay! So first post! I feel like it should be really epic - like Narnia or Lord of the Rings...or not. Today marks the official one week mark of summer vacation. So far I have achieved a glorious amount of nothing - which would explain the free time for bringing to you, dear readers, a continuous (hopefully bi-weekly) stream of interesting and exciting posts! I'm thinking book of the week/song of the day and then whatever strikes my fancy. At least that is the plan.

Song(s) of the Day: Endless Song of Happiness and New Soul by Yael Naim

Why you should listen: Yael Naim's folksy pop songs will make you want to dance. PLUS...she's Israeli and she sings in English, French, and Hebrew. Her song New Soul was featured in the latest Mac commercial for MacBook Air...if that's not a mark of brilliance, I don't know what is. New Soul was on #9 on the Billboard hot 100 list...the only Israeli solo artist to ever do so. And, come on guys, she's absolutely lovely! So add this to your soundtrack to the summer, everyone. This one's a winner.

Book of the Week: Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys

Why You Should Pick it Up: Okay, so I actually had to read this book for a class last semester and I'll be honest, I didn't actually read it when I was supposed to (you know, before you actually start talking about it in class...) But during finals week I decided to pick it up again for studying purposes and it ended up being the best idea ever. Not only did I trick myself into thinking I was procrastinating, this book is really, really good. For all of you Bronte fans out there familiar with Jane Eyre, you will find this especially interesting. Wide Sargasso Sea tells the story of Bertha (her real name is Antoinette) before Jane and Rochester, on the island of Jamaica, where the untold tale of madness, passion, and loss unfolds. Was Bertha mad or just misunderstood? Fact: Wide Sargasso Sea won the WH Smith Literary Award in 1967. It's a prequel of sorts and I promise you'll like it.

This week's is all about Prom. There's a pretty interesting story about a high school that had a tornado pass through the town on the night of the prom wiping out 1/3 of the town's houses. The students then try to explain why they think the tornado hit where it did. Interesting stuff.
